Make early contact with your appointed referee by phone or email to confirm the game is on and provide a named contact point for them on arrival. If the game is at risk of postponement, please provide an early indication
Confirm team colours (ideally for both sides, especially if there is a change strip to avoid a clash with the opposition)
Ensure the ref knows where your ground is; also, do let them know of any know road/travel problems in the vicinity of the ground
If the game is to be postponed, please let both the referee and the Whos the Ref contacts know as soon as possible
At the clubhouse, provide a changing facility with fully completed team sheets for both sides
If no assistant referees are allocated, supplying a ‘Touch Judge’ is helpful
Ensure medical facilities are available for player injuries
Team captains should support the referee in maintining team discipline – harassing the referee to explain every decision is not helpful, a considered constructive question is better!
Coaches/reserves must stay in their technical area
Above all please provide a supportive and positive environment for the match official – it really helps!
"If there is no referee there is no game" - this principle underlines the importance of the role of referees.
The harsh reality is that referees are retiring from the game as a result of referee abuse. Sadly, this is a growing problem in rugby and every one involved in the game has a responsibility to work to eradicate it. This extends across the club, its players, officials and supporters. It includes abuse at a match, onlie or through social media.
The WRRS urges every club to take this problem seriously at all levels of our game. Please note sanctions are in place for offending clubs. Please play your part in treating every official with respect and ensure across your club the same appoach is adopted.
Every club and every referee is doing their best to deliver a great game experience for one and all.
By working together, club and referee can increase the chance of us delivering the best possible game (no matter what the weather or conditions!)
So, a call to all clubs - please help our game by ensuring that this does not become an issue - thank you
